Biography

Nee Eliza Archibald, sister of Sholto Archibald and grandmother of Anna Archibald (q.v.). Also appears in the compensation records as Eliza, widow Dowdy and Eliza, widow Archibald.

  1. “James Thomas, Teacher, Residing at Black Quarry, in the Parish of St George’s Glasgow, and Eliza Theresa Archibald or Dowdie, Residing in No. 15 Montague Street, in this Parish, Daughter of the deceased Captain William Archibald late of the 30th Regiment of Foot and Relict of the also deceased James Dowdie, late Merchant at Rosseau in the Island of Dominica have been three tmes proclaimed in order to Marriage in the Parish Church of St Cuthberts and no Objections have been Offered. Married on the Fourth day of March thereafter [1836] by the Reverend George Johnston, Minister of the United Associate Secession Congregation in Nicolson Street.”

Living at Round Toll, Black Quarry, Glasgow in the census of 1841, age 40, born  England, with her husband James Thomas, age 60, Teacher, born England, Anna Archibald, age 12, born Foreign Parts, Robert Bell, age 9, born Scotland and 1 female servant. Living at 48 Dundas Street, Glasgow, in the census of 1851, occupation "Lodgings", age 49, with her sister Jane Archibald, age 35, born England, and two lodgers.

  3. Note that her birth year of c. 1801 (from the census records) is inconsistent with her description as grandmother of Anna Archibald (who was aged 8 in 1836 and age 12 in 1841).
