Biography

Son of John Beaufin the First (1765-1813) and Susannah Prince (1773-1852), and grandson of James Irving 'the Elder' (1713-1775), and cousin of Jacob Aemilius Irving (q.v.).

  1. Born in America, educated in England, then travelled extensively on the continent: 'he went to Jamaica in 1836 or '37 for a couple of years, then returned to England, married, and eventually settled at Cheltenham, which he made his home.'  'The family historian who endeavours to connect every member of the family with some interesting or remarkable event must fail.  In England the life of the average gentleman in moderate circumstances and not engaged in special pursuit is necessarily commonplace....there was nothing remarkable....This was the case of Mr John Beaufin Irving of Cheltenham.'   John Beaufin's son, also John Beaufin Irving, succeeded to Bonshaw estate in Scotland in 1895.

  2. Will of John Beaufin Irving late of Cheltenham who died at 24 Suffolk Square Cheltenham 06/10/1876 proved 07/11/1876 by Anna Maria Cronyn widow of Elphinstone Lodge South Dulwich and others, effects under £70,000.
