Biography

Son of Frederick Ferdinand Hill and brother of Jane Hill and Emeline Innes Hill. Probably the son of Favell Scott, who was certainly the mother of Emeline Innes Hill. All three children were the heirs of Favell Scott and slave-owners in St Thomas-in-the-East, Jamaica. Jane was in Britain as a minor by at least 1817 and Emeline was probably a governess in South Wales from at least 1851 to 1861.

  1. Frederick Ferdinand Hill's son is known to have later become 'John Hill M.D. of Dublin'. This was conceivably the man who died in 1871 with an obituary in the BMJ: 'JOHN HILL, M.D., DUBLIN. IT is with much regret that we announce the death of Dr. John Hill of Dublin, who has been for many years Poor-law Medical Inspector under the Medical Charities Act. He had previously been Surgeon to the South-East General Dispensary, Dublin, and Physician to the Kilmainham Fever Hospital.' To date LBS has not been able to validate this possible connection.
