One of the illegitimate children of Ann Whyte, "a free Sambo woman". With her mother and siblings, Maria owned enslaved people in St Thomas-in-the-East, although Robert Edmiston senior Esquire (presumably her father) held the life interest. Baptised aged 3 years 6 months in St Thomas-in-the-East, 10/03/1821.
