Biography

Eleanor Blewart (née Thompson) widow of Jackson Mason and John Blewart, mother of William Mason (q.v.) Awarded compensation for three claims in Jamaica as co-executor of John Thompson (q.v.), her brother.

  1. Eleanor Blewart née Thompson, born circa 1779, possibly in Overton, Lancashire. Given as aged 62 on 1841 Westmorland census. Place of birth given as out of county but marriage and birth of first three children in Lancaster. Shown as involved, with John Thompson of Cross Hill near Lancaster (possibly her nephew), Charles Horsfall (q,v.), Charles Bower and Henry, Mary and Margaret Cross in mortgage by lease and release of ‘Old Middleton Brows and other lands in Middleton and Overton’ in 1841.

  2.  Eleanor Thompson married Jackson Mason, Attorney-at-Law and Alderman of Lancaster, (widower of Grace Thompson) 12/09/1798 at St Mary’s, Lancaster, Lancashire. Three children born to this marriage: Elizabeth (born 28/03/1802, baptised 02/01/1805, St Mary’s, Lancaster, buried 26/07/ 1806 St Oswald, Warton Nr Lancaster, Lancashire, aged 4 yrs 4 months ), William (q.v.) (born 18/03/1803, baptised 02/01/1805, St Mary’s, Lancaster) and Marianne (Mary Ann), (born 14/08/1808, baptised 28/05/1815, Old Church, St Pancras, London).

  3. Jackson Mason buried 13/11/1809 St Oswald, Warton, Nr Lancaster, Lancashire, aged 57. Eleanor Mason married John Blewart 14/03/1811 at St Mary’s, Lancaster, Lancashire. One child known to be born to this marriage: William Blewart, born 08/11/1812, baptised 28/05/1815 Old Church, St Pancras.

  4. John Blewart died pre-2/05/1827 as Eleanor Blewert is described as a widow on a document in the Cumbria Record Office re an indenture of release on land near Harmony, Milnthorpe, Westmorland.

  5. Mrs Eleanor Blewert recorded in Parson & White’s 1829 Directory as living at Harmony Hill, Milnthorp.

6. Elinor Blewart living at Milnthorpe, Westmorland in the 1841 census. Occupation ‘Ind’, place of birth, out of county. Living with her is Mary Ann Mason, aged 27, occupation ‘Ind’, place of birth out of county, plus three female servants. Probably an error in the age of Mary Ann as she is almost certainly identifiable as the Marianne Mason given as born 14/08/1808 in Lancaster to Jackson and Eleanor Mason and baptised 28/05/1815 at Old Church, St Pancras, London – baptised at the same time as her younger half-brother William Blewart. Eleanor’s will names ‘my daughter, Mary Ann Mason’ and she would have to have been born before the 1811 marriage of Eleanor Mason and John Blewart.

  1. Several documents naming Eleanor Blewert held at Cumbria Record Office, Lancashire Record Office and the Museum of Rural Life and many references, including letters and accounts, involving Jackson Mason and also Eleanor Blewart and William Mason.

  2. Eleanor Blewart died 25/06/1844 near Lancaster, Lancashire. Will dated 08/10/1838 appointed her son, the Rev William Mason, Clerk, and Mary Ann Mason, spinster, her daughter, as executors. Probate granted 07/08/1844. Described as formerly of Harmony Hill, Milnthorp, Westmorland but late of Poulton, Lancashire. Will states ‘I give to my daughter Mary Ann Mason all my Real Estate situated in the County of Westmorland. I give to my son the Reverend William Mason his Heirs and Assigns absolutely all my Real Estate in the County of Lancaster. I give and bequeath unto my said Son absolutely one equal half part of the Parliamentary Stocks and Public Funds of Great Britain which are now or shall at the time of my decease be standing in my name in the Books of the Bank of England. I give and bequeath unto my said daughter absolutely the other half of the said Stocks and Funds and all the residue of my Personal Estate she paying all the just debts funeral and testamentary expenses.’ Sworn under £18,000.

  3.  Daughter Mary Ann Mason, aged 40, described in the 1851 census for Milnthorpe as living at Ryley Field, Milnthorpe and occupation given as Lady Fundholder.
