Biography

Merchant in St Croix, late of Glasgow, and a partner in John M'Caul and Sons of Glasgow (q.v.) which failed in 1820 (he was the son of John M'Caul). Executor of Cosmo Gordon (who died c. 1825)

  1. Matriculated Balliol Oxford 04/05/1805 aged 17, BA 1809, MA 1813 [as MacCaul].

  2. The executors of George Gordon identified in 1813 were John Gordon, Cosmo Gordon, Dr William M'Dougall, Dr Wm Stedman and John Sempill: clearly there was a network of Scots expatriates operating in St Croix and between there and Copenhagen, and possibly between St Croix, Copenhagen and Glasgow.

  3. Robert Buchanan, the trustee for the creditors of John and John Gordon M'Caul, was awarded compensation in that capacity for the Mt Annan estate in Trinidad and counterclaimed for the Westmorland estate, also in Trinidad.  

  4. A John Gordon McCaul served as Town Bailiff of Christiansted St Croix in 1864.
