Biography

Mary P. Whitton and Wm. Morgan counterclaimed unsuccessfully as executors of Wm. Whitton for a mortgage on Brotherston's estate in St Kitts (claim no. 717). Costs were awarded against them in favour of Archibald Paull (q.v.).

Mary Philippa Whitton, widow, of Stone Wall, Chiddingstone, Kent, also counterclaimed unsuccessfully against Benjamin Symmonds of Kensal House, Harrow Road, Middlesex for a mortgage on Norton's Valley Estate in the Virgin Islands (claim no. 11). The mortgage was dated 05/08/1805.

  1. Mary Philippa, daughter of Mr Thomas Alldridge in Union Street, was baptised at St Nicholas, Deptford, 01/12/1764. Mary Philippa's mother was Mary Slade whose will of 1803 "Mentions her sons, Thomas, East India House, & William, daughter, Mary Philipa & her husband, William Whitton, Great James St, Bedford Row, London, her aunts, Mary & Elisabeth Slade, John Fisher, Reading, Berks, George William Story, Henley upon Thames".

  2. "William Whitton Esquire, of the Parish of Saint Andrew Holborn in the County of Middlesex Widower, and Mary Philippa Alldridge of Reading in the County of Berks Spinster, were married in this Church by Licence on the Eighteenth day of January in the Year One thousand eight hundred and Two. By me John Lake Curate. This marriage was solemnised between us Wm Whitton M.P. Alldridge In the Presence of us Thomas Alldridge Mary Hill."

  3. In 1841 Mary Whitton was living on the High Street in Sevenoaks, Kent, age 75, of independent means, born in Kent, with Mary Arundell age 25 of independent means and Caroline Arundell age 20 of independent means, plus 2 male servants and 4 female servants. The 2 Arundell women were presumably relatives: an Elizabeth Arundell who died in 1839 age 25 was a niece of William Arundell, see 4, below.

  4. Memorial inscription in Chiddingstone churchyard: "Altar within rails with entrance to vault south side - William WHITTON of Stone Wall [near Edenbridge] in the County of Kent died 27 July 1832 in his 69th year also Mary Philippa Whitton his widow died 11 January 1849 in her 83rd year. North side – Caroline Woolmer WINHAM wife of the Rev. Daniel Winham of Tunbridge Wells & niece of the late William Whitton Esq. of Stone Wall died 3 May 1851 aged 34 years. West End: Elizabeth ARUNDELL niece of the late William Whitton of Stone Wall died 1 June 1839 aged 25 years". The will of Mary Philippa Whitton, widow of Penhurst, Kent, was proved 01/02/1849.
