Rose Backford added land to the existing Offley Holes estate in Hertfordshire in 1791. He had purchased it before 1781. He mortgaged the estate to Robert Curling c. 1795. Under the will of a later Robert Curling (d. 1894) a house called Offley Holes House was built to designs by W.A. Lucas. The house burnt down in 1919.
