William Harry Vane, 1st Duke of Cleveland [Earl of Darlington; Marquess of Cleveland]

MP (Whig/Independent)

Notes

NB: date for end of tenure at Totnes is approximate; ended 1790 but exact date is not known (and not given in Thorne for example.) Date of tenure for beginning of Winchelsea seat also unknown: given here as 31 December 1790 but sometime in 1790, following his tenure at Totnes.

His political affiliations shifted. Began as  Whig; but then supporter of Pitt. Voted in favour of slave trade abolition 1807.

As a peer (from 8 September 1792 as 3rd Earl of Darlington following his father's death), he gravitated towards the Whigs via the Carlton House party but briefly turned Tory in 1830. His rise through the peerage aided mainly by his extensive borough influence.
