Apparently a natural son. John Frere was shown at baptism in London in 1792 as John Frere Payne. Frances Payne, the mother, was shown as a spinster in the will of Applewhaite Frere, with whom she was living at the time the will was made in 1811. |

Enslaved boy on Unity Valley Pen, Jamaica. Manumitted in 1795 by David Barclay and removed to Philadelphia, with 29 other freed persons from the estate, where he was placed under the care of Society for Improving the Condition of Free Blacks.
