Notes

John Warren acquired 18 enslaved people on his marriage to Elizabeth Scarlett Innes in December 1823. It is likely that Elizabeth died at some point between 1829 and 1832 because thereafter John Warren was in possession of the enslaved people as guardian to his children. Presumably they were part of a trust during his marriage. The enslaved people have not been traced before that date, nor is it clear that Innes brought the land of Elgin/Industry to the marriage. The identification with the property of the children of Joan Beard and Joseph Hardy is tentative.
