Estate Notes →
"From 1736 to 1755 (around the time of the Leeward Maroon treaty), Aberdeen slave plantation was leased by Alexander Forbes of Scotland from Alexander McFarlane's Island Estates in St Elizabeth, and in 1772 still belonged to an Alexander Forbes as a sugar-and-slave estate. The Aberdonian slave community was missionized by the English Moravians and the Moravian Church is a central focus of contemporary Aberdeen, which was founded as a free village by emancipated slaves who moved off Aberdeen estate around 1845, in association with the Moravian missionaries, to live on the southern foothills of the Cockpit Country nearer to the plains." Aberdeen first appears in the Accounts Produce in 1772, the property of Alexander Forbes with William Harvie and Hugh Wallace as trustees. At some point between 1782 and 1786 it was aquired by William Mitchell, then afterwards by Dr James Rowe. Rowe had died by 1799. His daughter Deborah Margaret Rowe was the owner in trust in 1801. Aberdeen appears in the almanac of 1811 registered to James Rowe, deceased. In the almanac of 1816 it was registered to the estate of James Rowe with the note: "Negroes sold and removed". The estate is not listed with the name Aberdeen in any subsequent almanacs and has not been identified in the slave registers or the compensation...

↳  Claim
Barbados 3301 (Adams Castle)
Estate Notes →
According to Hughes-Queree, the plantation was established by Sir Robert Hackett between 1674 and 1679. Under his will of 1679, his wife, Dame Frances Hackett was to have ‘sole possession & management’ for life of the plantation of 400 acres. She re-married in 1679 to Thomas Walrond, who became the owner of the 340 acres. By 1715 the plantation was reduced to 246 acres. Walrond died in 1694. His heirs included Frances and Elizabeth. Frances married William Adams. Their grandson, Thomas Maxwell Adams, inherited the plantation from his great aunt, Elizabeth Maxwell neé Walrond in 1750. According to the Adams Castle Development Inc. website (2015), "The first recorded history of Adams Castle Estate was in 1674 as seen on Forde’s map of Barbados, only 47 years after the first English settlement on the island. It was then called Hackett’s Plantation and owned by Sir Robert Hackett, who left the 400 acre plantation to his wife Dame Frances Hackett in 1679 with instructions that it would go to his son William Hackett on her death. Unfortunately for William, Frances remarried in that same year to Thomas Walrond and the plantation passed to her husband and was renamed Walrond’s Plantation. Frances and Thomas had two daughters, Frances and Elizabeth. The elder, Frances, married William Adams and inherited the property in 1694 upon the death of Frances Walrond formerly Hackett. Frances and William Adams had a son, Thomas Adams who later married Margaret Maxwell. They in turn had a son named Thomas Maxwell Adams. On the death of her first husband Frances Adams remarried to the Honourable George Graeme, owner of Graeme Hall, and the estate became his. The younger sister, Elizabeth Walrond, married James Elliot and in 1715 he began a seven year process which resulted in his ownership of the estate. On his death James Elliott bequeathed the property to his wife Elizabeth who, although remarrying to Thomas Maxwell, had no children to whom to pass the...

Association Notes →
The enslaved people on Adelphi were registered to D.H. Rucker in the 1817, 1822 and 1825 Slave Registers, as owner in the case of 1817 and 'in the possession of' in 1822. However, by 1828 and certainly at the time of slave compensation the estate was again in the hands of the descendants of Charles Grant, notwithstanding the fact that Rucker had bought in the equity of redemption of Charles Grant in 1810. The key to this sequence might be an earlier deed of 31/03/1800, which appears to show Daniel Henry Rucker as having become mortgagee of Charles Grant c.1794 for £16,000 of the enslaved people rather than the estate. There is possibly some entwining of the Adelphi and Wallibo estates in LBS' reading of the...

Estate Notes →
Bought by Thomas Hibbert senior in 1769 when it was pasturage, woods and a coffee plantation. A large part of the land was developed into a sugar estate by Thomas Hibbert senior in the 1770s, with a substantial pen. Bequeathed to his nephews Thomas (1774-1819), Robert (1750-1835) and Thomas (1761-1807) as tenants in common on the death of Thomas Hibbert senior in 1780. By 1796 the estate and pen appear to have been owned by Thomas Hibbert of Aqualta Vale (1761-1807). He bequeathed his real estate in Jamaica to his eldest son Thomas Hibbert (1795-1845) in trust to heirs male. Aqualta Vale became the subject of the Chancery suit Washington Hibbert & others v Thomas Hibbert & others following disputes over the settling of Thomas Hibbert's will.
