Biography

Posthumous son of George Ricketts of New Canaan and his third wife Elizabeth Cleaver. Not be confused with Sir George William Ricketts (c. 1791-1831), the Madras judge and son of George Crawford Ricketts and brother of Thomas Bourke and John Bourke Ricketts. The compensation for the Canaan estate was awarded to Francis Love Beckford, Francis Love Beckford junior, and Richard Hinchley [sic], described as trustees of George William Ricketts.

  1. The New Canaan estate was the subject of the 1791 marriage settlement of George William Ricketts then of Bishops Sutton, and Laetitia Mildmay of Shawford House, both in the county of Southampton. Neither the Beckfords nor Hinchley appear in that deed as trustees, but in the papers of the Godwin Austen family of Shalford is a deed concerning the appointment of Francis Love Beckford senior and junior, and Richard Hinckley [sic] as new trustees in place of Charles Nicholas Pallmer in 1829.

  2. The will of George William Ricketts of Watford, Hertfordshire was proved 20/10/1842. In the will he explained that the had already assigned the New Canaan estate in trust for his eldest son George Robert Goodin Ricketts and his household effects to his wife. He had nothing to leave except the few thousand pounds that might remain after Lord Ashburton (Alexander Baring) had received his repayments on his [Ricketts'] insurance policies with the Equitable and the Rock, which had been assigned to Baring: Ricketts had insured his life for £5000 under each of the two policies in 1813, and Baring had paid the annual premia of £520 5s 2d at 3% from an unspecified date. Ricketts' address was Nascot House.  His children included Sir Henry Ricketts (1802-1886), an East India Company servant, George Robert Good[w]in Ricketts (q.v.) and Edward Woodville Ricketts, a noted yachtsman.
