Biography

Robert William Dallas (1789-1849), son of Sir Robert Dallas (1756-1824) and first cousin of his co-awardee Sir Robert Charles Dallas (q.v.).

  1. Born 18/06/1789 to Sir Robert Dallas (1756-1824), jurist, and his first wife Charlotte Jardine and baptised 18/07/1789 at St George, Bloomsbury, London.

  2. Attended Westminster School, admitted to St John's College Cambridge 26/06/1807. Entered the Army in 1808 as an Ensign, 9th Foot Regiment; promoted to Lieutenant in 1811; severely wounded at St Jean de Luz in 1814; promoted to Captain in the York Chasseurs in 1815 and the 9th Foot in 1817. Became a Major in the 1st West India Regiment in 1847 and retired the same day. 

  3. Married Lucy, daughter of Henry Davidson of Bedford Square (q.v.) 09/05/1818 by license in St George's Parish, Bloomsbury. Their first two children Robert William and Caroline were born in 1819 and 1820 and baptised in Marylebone (no parents' abode listed). Two more sons, Henry and Duncan Davidson, were baptised in Ealing in 1822 and 1823 (where the parents' abode is given as Ealing). A further son George Frederick was baptised in Little Stanmore in 1827 (parents' abode, Little Stanmore). 

  4. Living at 17 Upper Harley Street in the 1841 census, age 45, occupation "Army", born in county, with his wife Lucy, daughter Caroline, 3 male and 4 female servants. Died 11/09/1849, age 60, at Tunbridge Wells. Lucy was still living at 17 Upper Harley Street in 1851, widowed, with Caroline and servants. 

  5. "The Will of Lucy Dallas formerly of 2 Queensbury-place King’s-road Brighton in the County of Sussex but late of Englefield Green in the County of Surrey Widow deceased who died 16 September 1870 at Englefield Green aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oaths of Robert William Dallas of Ilkley Wells Likley near Leeds in the County of York Esquire and George Frederick Dallas of Summerfield near Kirkby Lonsdale in the County of Westmoreland a Lieutenant Colonel in Her Majesty’s Army the Sons the Executors. Effects under £30,000.” Robert William junior died in 1890 (personal estate £36,774 12s 11d) and George Frederick died in 1888 (personal estate £9,404 4s 3d).
