Biography

James Grant, baptised 20/09/1789, son of Lieut. Alexander Grant of the Independent Company of Invalids in Newton of Blackhills and his wife Elizabeth Fraser in Elgin, Scotland.

Living at Prospect Lodge, Main Road, Elgin, in the censuses of 1841, 1851 and 1861, "Fundholder (retired from Jamaica)".

Died 08/01/1865 at Prospect Lodge, Elgin. His death record gives his occupation as fundholder, widower of Mary Hall Williams, age 75 and his father Alexander Grant deceased as Lieutenant Colonel of Morayshire Volunteers (half-pay). "The confirmation under seal of the Commissariot of Elgin and Nairn dated 22 March 1865 of Elizabeth Lachlan Duff and Josephine Mary Grant the daughters, Doctor George Duff all residing in Elgin and Alexander Cooper Esquire Writer in Elgin as accepting executors nominate of the late James Grant residing at Elgin aforesaid 8 January 1865 was sealed at the Principal Registry London."

Had 5 children - all born in Jamaica - Ann Grant, Elizabeth Lachlan Grant, Frances Cecilia Grant, Josephine Mary Grant and Margaret Grant. 3 of the children baptised at Westmoreland, Jamaica.
