Biography

London merchant, returnee from Jamaica, son of John Higgin and partner in Higgin, Whiteley (q.v.), who died in 1832, apparently on a visit back to Jamaica: his widow Margaret Higgin (q.v.) and co-executors were awarded the compensation for six estates in St Ann, Jamaica.

  1. Baptism 02/05/1789 at St Andrew Holborn of Isaac Higgin son of John and Mary Higgin.

  2. Isaac Higgin AJ and magistrate and vestryman St Anns 1824.

  3. Will of Isaac Higgin [late of the parish of Saint Ann and island of Jamaica but now] of Grove Cottage near Tooting Surrey [and of London Street Fenchurch Street City of London] merchant (made in October 1831) was proved 15/05/1832. In the will he detailed recent purchases in Jamaica, including (1) the Cave Valley plantation or sugar works in St Ann from Edward James Esq., subject to an annuity of £400 p.a. to Timothy Bellamore and his wife Rebecca and an annuity of £1200 p.a. to Edward James and a sum of £14,000 now reduced to £12,000, together with adjacent lands from different vendors; (2) the Dover Castle pen. He left these estates together with two others he named as Tooting and Hyde Park in trust to secure, among other monetary legacies, annuities of £700 p.a. to his wife Margaret and £100 p.a. to his sister Mary. The will identifies his partner as George Whiteley and his nephew and niece as George and Jane Whiteley, presumably the children of his partner and brother-in-law. It identified his eldest son as John.

  4. Baptisms of Margaret Syms Higgin to Isaac and Margaret Higgin at Lewisham St Mary 01/10/1827; Mary Ann to Isaac (merchant) and Mary [sic] of Mount Pleasant Lewisham at Lewisham St Mary 1827; Sarah Emily to Isaac (Gent.) and Margaret Higgin of Upper Tooting late of Jamaica at Streatham St Leonard 08/08/1832.

  5. Death of Isaac Higgin, son of late Isaac Higgin of No. 18 London St. and of the Island of Jamaica May 1854.
