Biography

Widow of Dr Robert Scarlett and certainly the mother of Louise Scarlett (q.v.). Owner of 31 enslaved people on Cinnamon Hill.

  1. Mary White, daughter of Hugh White, married Robert Scarlett in Richmond, Yorkshire in 11/09/1796. The couple's children included Louise (born 25/05/1799), Mary (born 05/09/1800) and Robert James Scarlett (born 1803). Mary Scarlett (born 1800) is almost certainly the Mary Scarlett who married Joseph Brissett 20/09/1821 at St Anne's, Kew. The claim between Louise and Joseph Brissett senior, as guardian to Joseph Brissett the younger, appears to make sense in this context. The elder Mary Scarlett died in London in 1839, according to the genealogical source. This is not borne out by the will of Mary Scarlett widow of Chelsea Middlesex proved 30/01/1839, which appears to be of an unconnected woman.

  2. In 1841, 1851 and 1861 Louise Scarlett 'cousin' born Jamaica (c . 1800) was living with Lady Louise Currey, wife and then widow of Sir Edmund Currey, at Erlwood house Windlesham Surrey. In 1861 Peter C. Scarlett 'brother' was also living at the house. Peter Campbell Scarlett was the son and Louise Lawrence the daughter of Sir James Scarlett (Baron Abinger), the brother of Dr Robert Scarlett: Louise Lawrence Scarlett had married Sir Edmund Currey in 1828.
