Biography

Mary Anne Peterkin, daughter of James Peterkin and Ann Gordon, later married to Lieut.-Col. Peter Grant, inherited Chatham estate in Jamaica from her brother John Gordon Peterkin.

  1. John Gordon Peterkin, son of James Peterkin and Ann Gordon, was baptised 22/01/1807 in Kinloss, Moray, Scotland. Mary Anne Peterkin, daughter of James Peterkin and Ann Gordon, was baptised 26/04/1808 in Kinloss, Moray, Scotland. The death of the eldest child (possibly James Peterkin who was baptised 07/08/1797 in St Nicholas, Aberdeen, or Alexander Robert Peterkin who was baptised 29/10/1805 in Kinloss, Moray) of James Peterkin of Grange, was listed in the Times on 13/04/1819.

  2. Chatham estate was owned by the heirs of James Peterkin in 1826 and by John Gordon Peterkin in 1833.

  3. "Grange Hall estate [of Kinloss, Moray] purchased about 1800 by John Gordon Peterkin 'of Grange and Greshop' (Forres), who built the mansion house around 1809. He was succeeded by his sister Mary-Anne who married Major Grant of Invererne, taking the name of Grant Peterkin." John Gordon Peterkin is recorded as letting his home Grange-hall, by Forres, Morayshire, for 2-3 years in 1832.

  4. "In 1832 the estate [Inverene House, Forres] was sold to Colonel Peter Grant who married Mary Anne Peterkin of Grange, taking the name Grant Peterkin. The name of the property was changed from Tannachy to Invererne by 1834."

  5. The tombstone of Mary Anne Grant Peterkin reads: "To the cherished and beloved memory of Mrs Mary Ann Grant Peterkin of Grange and Greeshop. By her sorrowing husband Colonel Peter Grant Peterkin of Invererne who was bereaved of her valued companionship by the unsparing hand of death on the 10th Dec 1854 in the 46th year of her age. Also of Colonel Peter Grant Peterkin of Invererne who died 24th Nov 1878 in the 92nd year of his age."
