Richard Quarrell junior

Anglican clergyman, and slave-owner in Jamaica. He appears to have been born and baptised in Wiltshire, but to have been in Jamaica in the late 1820s, before coming to Britain in his early 30s to attend university before ordination.

1. Identified as 'Clerk' in 1837 Railway Subscribers lists, which gives his address as Oxford House, Cheltenham, consistent with the Cheltenham address in the compensation records. An Oxford House is extant [Bath Road], Grade II listed. Mrs Quarrell was listed at Oxford House Margaret St. in 1830.

2. 1851 census Richard Quarrell aged 53 Curate of Emmanuel Church living at Wellington Villa, Park Place: born 'Barford Hall' Wilts. Household includes sons William and Richard aged 9 born Cheltenham Gloucs. and wife Frances aged 28. 1841 census shows him at Clifton clerk aged 45 with wife Jane and son William aged one.

3. Rev. Richard Quarrell of Wiltshire. Matric. Lent 1831, BA 1835. Ordained 1835, curate of Brailes Warwickshire 1841-2; Chaplain to the Union Bath 1844-9; Curate of Emmanuel Church Weston-super-Mare 1850-62. Died 19/02/1862.

4. Richard Quarrell baptised 21/11/1795 Downton Wilts., son of Richard Quarrell.  [Barford house, Downton Wilts was the seat of Sir Charles Duncombe 1791].

5. Bequeathed £2000 sterling in the will of his father Richard Quarrell of Hanover, Jamaica (written 1815 and proved in London 1820). Appears to have bought Phoenix estate from receivers appointed by the Court of Chancery at some point between 1829 and 1832.
