Biography

London banker in Whitmore, Wells (q.v.), awarded with his partners (including Frederick Whitmore, q.v.) compensation under four awards in Trinidad as mortgagees of Andrew Mackintosh, under three other smaller awards on the same island, and one with Frederick Whitmore and George Leake (possibly as trustees) in Jamaica. The banking firm of Whitmore Wells failed in 1841.

  1. In 1841 Edward Whitmore banker aged 55 was living at The Grove Epsom with wife Elizabeth aged 40, 2 daughters and 2 sons aged 15-25 (presumably from an earlier marriage) and a son and daughter (Mary) aged 2 and 6 months respectively. In 1851 an Edward Whitmore aged 66 born City of London 'stock and share broker' was living at 5 Montagu Street with wife Elizabeth aged 51 and daughter Mary aged 10 born Epsom. Will of Edward Whitmore of Montagu Street, Russel Square Middlesex proved 07/02/1857.

  2. An unsourced online series on the history of Epsom and Ewell gives Edward Whitmore's birth 11/06/1784, the third son of John junior, baptised 08/07/1784 at St Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, London. "As a result of a family agreement on 3 & 4 March 1828, he came into possession of the Epsom property [The Grove House, where he was living in 1841]." The same website has his memorial inscription from St Martin's, Epsom: "South Side: In Memory of FRANCES Wife of EDWARD WHITMORE ESQR. who died 28th of June 1833 in the 40th Year of her Age. Also Two of their children JOHN died 18th Feby. 1828 Aged 6 Days. HARRIET died 6thJuly 1828 Aged 17 months. North Side: To the Memory of EDWARD WHITMORE ESQR. who died 26th of Jany. 1857 Aged 72 Years. Also of ELIZABETH second wife of the above who died on the 12th of August 1861 and buried at Frensham near Farnham." Grove House was sold by public auction following Whitmore's bankruptcy in 1841.
