Biography

Archdeacon of Suffolk 1819-1846, son of Charles Berners of Marylebone. Henry Denny Berners counterclaimed with George Capper and Capper's wife Ann[e], the daughter of George Reid of Jamaica, under a mortgage for £10,000 on the Friendship estate in Trelawny. It is not clear in what capacity Berners was acting. Under a second claim for Friendship, appears a counterclaim from 'The Rev George Capper executor of Mary Reid spinster creditor by bond and judgement and under an indenture of 9th August 1823 charging the debt on this estate'; also from 'The Rev Henry Denny Berners and the Rev Geo Capper and Ann his wife, as entitled to the interest for their lives as stated of £10,000 sterling at 5 per cent -for arrears. £2700 to Mrs Capper'. Also from Mary Reid spinster annuitant of £500 under the will of George Reid.

  1. Matriculated St Mary Hall 14/10/1787 aged 18; BCL 1794. Married Sarah Jarrett, who was born in Jamaica 1775, daughter of John Jarrett of Jamaica (1746-1809). Will of Henry Denny Berners late Archdeacon of the Archdeaconry Woolverstone Park proved 25/02/1852. Woolverstone Hall, which Berners inherited from his elder brother, became a progressive school at which Ian MacEwan was educated: it is now the site of Ipswich High School.

  2. The Berners family significantly intermarried with the Jarrett family of Orange Valley, Jamaica (including Herbert Newton Jarrett III with Henry Denny Berners' sister Maria, whose son was Herbert Newton Jarrett V (q.v.)): three of Charles Berners' four children married Jarretts.
