Biography

Awarded the compensation for the Hermitage estate in Portland Jamaica as owner-in-fee.

  1. Until 1820, Hermitage was shown against Ann Newell (the daughter of James Launce who died c. 1775 and widow of Joshua Newell), the mother of Ann Launce Hill.

  2. Ann Launce Newell married Hugh Hill in 1796 in Millbrook, Hampshire. Death of Ann Lance [sic] Hill registered Lewisham Q3 1848. Will of Ann Launce Hill of Eltham Kent, widow of the Reverend Hugh Hill Doctor of Divinity, proved 21/10/1848. In the will she left a series of monetary legacies of £100 each to legatees including two daughters of William Peatt Litt (q.v.) and Joseph Brough 'my attorney residing on my estate called Hermitage.' She left £500 in trust for the maintenance of the graves in St Mary's Southampton of her mother Ann Newell and her sister Bridget Launce Hill, and the grave in Holy Rood Southampton of her late husband; any surplus was to be applied to the benefit of the 'distressed objects' of the two parishes. Her residuary legatee was her daughter Ann Newell Hill. When Ann Newell Hill spinster of Asby Lodge Carlton Road Putney and of Castle Bank, Appleby, Westmoreland died 12/10/1892 she left £100,177 5s 2d: she had succeeded to John Hill (d. 1861) as Lord/Lady of the Manor of Asby Winderwath, Westmorland.

  3. 'Ann Launce Hill' was registered as a charity 26/01/1962 and amalgamated 29/02/1992;  a second, apparently separate 'Charity of Ann Launce Hill' was registered 22/09/1999 'Religious congregations and associations.'
