Clement Kirwan

???? - 1832

Biography

Husband of Elizabeth Kirwan (q.v.).

  1. Will of Clement Kirwan of Kendal Lodge Essex proved 26/04/1832. Under the will [made 15/05/1827] he recited his marriage settlement of 1800 with his 'present wife' Elizabeth, then Elizabeth Mann, and left £6000 of the £7000 settled under that deed equally to his children if his wife had predeceased him: the other £1000 were to be divided as his wife should direct in her will. He left the Old Road estate on Montserrat in trust for his two sons as tenants-in-common at the age of 25. He left an annuity of £50 p.a. to his brother Thomas Kirwan. There was, he said, considerable indebtedness owned to him and his brother Matthew from William Dardis Furlonge of Montserrat [this is consistent with the details for Montserrat claims nos. 231 and 232, for the Syms or Symes and Paradise estates]. He left his freehold property at Epping in trust with wide discretion for his trustees to sell it and include the proceeds in his personal estate. In a codicil of 1828 he made his wife sole trustee, and left the Farm and New Windward estates and the enslaved people on them and three parcels of land called Eastmond Lane, Sayers Land and Cedar Gut to be worked by his son John Francis Kirwan and the Old Road and Waterworks estate and the enslaved people on them on Montserrat to be worked by his son George Saint Lo Kirwan, with no interference in the management of one by the other.

  2. Eliza Mary, the daughter of Clement and Elizabeth Kirwan, became Countess de Fleury, Baroness de Perignan: she has a memorial in St Botolph's Northfleet.
