Biography

London West India merchant and partner with Daniel Henry Rucker and Henry John Rucker in D.H.Rucker & Co., which failed in 1831. The assignees of the firm, Joseph Edlman and John Watson Borradaile (both of whom q.v.), in their capacity as assignees, were awarded or claimed unsuccessfully the compensation in 7 awards in Antigua, Tobago and St Vincent.

  1. Death of John Anthony Rucher [sic] registered Q4 1846 Isle of Wight Hampshire. He had married Ann Bencraft in 1810.

  2. Daniel Henry Rucker (1816-1890, not the Daniel Henry Rucker of D.H. Rucker & Co., who died in 1848) was the son of John Anthony Rucker, and also a colonial or sugar broker, leaving £169,895 3s 9d on his death, and worked in a firm that evolved from Rucker & Bencraft, the firm of his mother's family and presumably also of his father's relations. This Daniel Henry Rucker (1816-1890) was the father of Sir Arthur William Rucker, who has an entry in the ODNB as 'physicist.'

  3. The will of John Anthony Rucker of St Pancras [made in 1840] was proved 07/06/1851. The will is very simple, leaving everything to his wife Ann and identifying his brother-in-law as Wm. Bencraft and his son as Daniel Henry Rucker jun.
