???? - 1835
Bowen Hall had been owned by 3 generations of Bowens, the last one of whom John - who died 12/3/1835 on Bowen Hall - had been resident in Philadelphia with wife Martha Powel[l] Bowen and brother-in-law Austin Montgomery. The fate of the compensation money paid to him was subject to extended litigation in the US enduring at least until 1875: the issue was whether the compensation process converted real estate (the enslaved people under Jamaica law, according to the suit) to personalty.
