Thomas Boddington the elder

1774 - 1862

Biography

Son of Benjamin Boddington (1730-1791) and father of Thomas Boddington the younger (q.v.). Described as 'retired merchant' in the 1861 census, which put his age at 80; the 1851 census similarly put his age as 70, but the registration of his burial at All Souls Kensal Green in 1862 gave his age as 88, consistent with a baptism record for Thomas Boddington son of Benjamin Boddington in 1774. Despite the 1861 census occupation, it is not clear how much involvement this Thomas Boddington had in the family firm: by the time of slave compensation, it was his son Thomas Boddington the younger who appears in the compensation records.
