Biography

Resident slave-owner on Jamaica. 'Lt-Col. John Edward Payne' as a Magistrate led a search of the house of the Baptist missionary Mr Abbott in the aftermath of the Baptist War of 1831.

John Edward Payne, bachelor, and Charlotte Howorth, spinster of Hyde Hall estate, were married in St James, Jamaica, 05/01/1809. Anne Payne, daughter to Mr John Payne and Charlotte late Howarth his wife, born 16/05/1810, baptised in Trelawney 06/05/1811. Eliza (born 18/07/1812) and David Richards (born 07/12/1814), children of J. E. Payne and Charlotte his wife, baptised in Trelawney 01/01/1816 and 07/01/1816 respectively. David Richard Payne, only son of John Edward Payne of Jamaica, matriculated Trinity College, Oxford in 1835 aged 20. He was buried in St Mellon, Cardiff, in 1838 aged 23 years (presumably at the home of his mother's sister Ann Rollings (q.v.)).

John Edward Payne remarried, to Frances Mary [surname unknown] between 1826 and 1820, presumably following the death of Charlotte.
