William Alexander of St Vincent

Resident in St Vincent but travelling to England in 1813 and dying there c.1814.

1. Will of William Alexander of St Vincent proved 15/04/1815 [Ancestry.com gives 03/01/1816]. The will comprised a number of separate documents. In the first, dated 12/01/1801, William Alexander of St Vincent, about to travel to Trinidad, left his property in St Vincent and Trinidad in trust to Robert Paul now in England, John [Horne?] of Grenada, and David Miller and Collin Campbell of St Vincent, to be sold to fund legacies of £2000 to his sister Elizabeth Rose of Bromley College Kent and of £500 to Mary Stewart of St Vincent for whose 'fidelity and kind attention' he was infinitely indebted. Elizabeth Rose was his residuary legatee. In a second document, dated 29/01/1803, 'being again about to depart for Trinidad', William Alexander explained that since his original will he had jointly purchased the Colonarie Vale estate with Walter Coningham. He wanted Conigham to have preference in buying out his half of the estate or having £500 from the proceeds, after settling the advances made by William Coningham, Walter's brother. He also left land to Mary Stewart, having concluded that his estate would comfortably support the legacies under his first will. In a further codicil, he appointed new executors, the original ones having died. In 1813 he appointed trustees on his departure for Europe. Administration was granted to Elizabeth Rose in February 1814 [on the grounds that William Alexander had died a bachelor and intestate), and then revoked and a double probate granted on 15/04/1815 and 03/01/1816. Further letters of administration were granted 07/05/1825 (when William Alexander was described as late of Alfred Place Bedford Square) to Susanna Louisa Stratton, the administratrix of Elizabeth Rose; and 05/04/1831 to Robert Stratton, widower of Susanna Louisa Stratton.

2. In the will of Elizabeth Rose widow of Bromley College Kent proved 27/03/1824 (which identified her as the widow of the Rev. Charles Rose of Graffham in Sussex), she remarked on the 'large property' to which she was entitled as the residuary legatee of William Alexander, and left £8000 in trust for the benefit of Bromley College (where she had lived for 22 years). She left £3000 to Mrs Louisa Stratton wife of Robert Stratton surgeon of Berners Street and £1000 to each of their two children. She also made a large number of smaller monetary legacies to friends and servants, to which she added in a series of codicils.
