Philip Jaquet

???? - 1834

Biography

Philip Jaquet (fl. 1817-1834), slave-owner and attorney in Jamaica. He was the son of John Lewis (or Jean Louis) Jaquet of Epsom Surrey in England, and died in Jamaica c. 1834.

  1. Will of Philip Jaquet of St George, Surrey Jamaica made in 1832 and proved 13/01/1835. He left the Epsom estate and the enslaved people attached to it to Isabella McKay and her [and by inference his] seven children, and divided £5000 in British government securities among several of his children, including Philip, then in London.

  2. Philip Jaquet, solicitor, born 1804 [probably in fact 1806], son to Colonel Philip Jaquet, late of the St. George Militia, was too young to have been the man shown in the early slave registrations beginning in 1817. This younger Philip Jaquet was articled to a lawyer in England in 1823. Philip Jaquet's second wife, Emma Lemon Jaquet (née) Glanon, was youngest daughter to the late William Glanon of Greenbank, Falmouth, Britain. The younger Philip Jaquet's son, Sydney Jaquet, was born at Vevey, Switzerland, 1/9/1861. Sydney Jaquet moved to Jamaica in 1879, was articled to his father in 1880, and was admitted as a solicitor 6/1/1885 and practiced law in Port Antonio thereafter. The younger Philip Jaquet died aged 84 in 1888. His wife Emma died aged 93 at Broadstone, Dorset, in 1915.
