Sir Robert Mackreth

Biography

MP for Castle Rising (1774-1784) and Ashburton (1784-1802). Sir Robert Mackreth has an entry in the ODNB as 'speculator and politician', which notes his ownership of a part share of a plantation and slaves in Grenada He was the developer of Whites Club, which he had inherited from his father-in-law after starting as a waiter in its predecessor.

In the will of Sir Robert Mackreth of Ewhurst Hampshire proved 04/08/1819 he left the bulk of his property including his 3/10ths share in an estate in St Mark Grenada formerly called Spooner Hall or Spooner's Hall but now called Tufton Hall 'with the slaves, stock and appurtenances' on it to Henry Williams, the grandson of his brother John. Henry Williams in accordance with the preference expressed in the will changed his name to Mackreth (q.v. under Henry Williams Mackreth).
