Biography

Daughter of Richard Saxby and his wife Sarah, baptised 10/01/1800 in Sevenoaks, Kent. Married John Matthews Bowsell 01/12/1824 in West Dean by Seaford, Sussex. Widowed in 1827, remarried to Henry Coppard by 1835. In 1846, Henry Coppard was implicated in a corruption case arising from his attempt to purchase for his step-son (also named John Matthews Boswell) a cadetship in the East India Co. for £1000.

Granted Abbey Green in St David, Jamaica, as tenant-for-life under the will of her first husband.

In 1841 Sarah, age 35, was living at St Peter's Place, Brighton, with her children James age 15 and Sarah age 13, Emily Saxby age 14 and one female servant. In 1851 she was living at 8 Cornfield, Eastbourne, age 50, born Riverhead, Kent, with her son John M. Boswell age 25, son-in-law Stephen Lowdell age 30, solicitor, daughter Sarah Lowdell, age 23, grand-daughter Eliza age 1 and one female servant. In 1861 she was living at 18 Church Street, Seaford, Sussex, in the household of her son-in-law Stephen Lowdell. Next door was her 90 year old father Richard Saxby, with his grandson Richard Serace[?] Saxby. In 1871 she was at 96 Penrose Street, Lambeth, with her grand-daughter Sarah Lowdell. In 1881 at 42 Rose Hill Terrace, Brighton, with her grand-daughters Florence and Constance Lowdell.
