John Matthews Boswell

1. Born 05/11/1803 and baptised 05/12/1803 at Kingston, Jamaica, son of John and Mary Boswell. He died 22/07/1827.

2. Two children born with wife Sarah: John Matthews Boswell junior, baptised in Rottingdean, Sussex, 04/11/1825, married Jane Napper Q1 1845 in Petworth, Sussex; Sarah Mary Barker Boswell, baptised 25/07/1827 in Steyning, Sussex, married Stephen Lowdell 23/08/1848 in Brighton, Sussex.

3. Will of John Matthews Boswell of West Dean Sussex proved 17/09/1827. He opened the will with the recital of the settlement made before his marriage to Sarah Saxby, under which all his Jamaica property was subject to a rent charge of £750 Jamaica currency p.a. to his mother late Mary Boswell widow then the wife of Richard Carter of Cloudsley Terrace Islington under the will of his late father and also to an annuity of £400 p.a. payable to his [the testator's] wife Sarah. Subject to these obligations, he left his Abbey Green estate and his other property in trust for the use of his wife for life and then to be converted into cash for the benefit of all his children, failing whom for the benefit of Richard Carter son of 'my said father-in-law' [= stepfather], Margaret Pugh of Chelsea and the testator's four aunts Judith Barker [q.v.] spinster; Ann Newman wife of Charles Newman esq. and Elizabeth Marston widow now residing in Jamaica; and Martha Stokes [q.v.] of Chelsea, Middlesex, widow. His executors included Richard Saxby and William Lawrence.
