Amelia [no surname given]

1767 - ????

Biography

Enslaved person living and working on Unity Valley Pen (Portland), Jamaica. Manumitted in 1795 by David Barclay (q.v.) and removed to Philadelphia, with 29 other freed persons from the estate, where placed under the care of Society for Improving the Condition of Free Blacks.

Amelia was 28 at the time of her manumission and likely to have been born in Africa. Upon arriving in Philadelphia she was indentured for 2 years 'found in clothes' and given '$26.66 freedom dues' to be paid by her master. In 1801 Barclay wrote an account of the emancipation and the fortunes of the former enslaved now living in Philadelphia; Amelia was listed as married to John (q.v.) and living with London (q.v.) and his wife.
