Irish landowner, and one of a group of owners of estates and enslaved people on Grenada and Dominica. Accounts prepared by Thomson Hankey (q.v.) for 'Lord Templetown' In 1817 and the late Lord Templetown in 1820 are in the Archives at Yale.
Will of Rt Hon. Clotworthy Upton proved 20/05/1785. In the will, which deals largely with his estates in Ireland, he left his [unnamed] property in Grenada, including enslaved people, in trust for his wife for life and then instructed it to be sold and the proceeds divided among his children.
In 1769, Lauchlin Macleane, John Stuart, Sir Thomas Charles Bunbury, Clotworthy Upton and George Ridge, who owned shares in the La Tante, Saint Cloud (Saint Cloux), Le Grand Bras, Chantilly, Saint Maur and two other plantations in Grenada, and Balamonly [sic] and 11 other estates on Dominica issued a power of attorney to the London merchants Simond and Hankey.

Jamaican-born widow of a prominent slave-owner; resident in Britain following the death of her husband in 1818. Accused - and acquitted - of the cruel treatment of some enslaved people whom she brought to Britain with her.
Document comprises 4 parts, written recto and verso across 5 folios: 1. An inventory and valuation of enslaved persons at Windsor Estate, St Elizabeth parish, Jamaica, 1814. 2. An inventory and valuation of enslaved persons at Williamsfield settlement, St Elisabeth parish, Jamaica, 1814. 3. An inventory of animals at Windsor Estate, St Elizabeth parish, Jamaica, 1814. 4. A cover note outlining the contents of the document.
