Richard Worswick

???? - 1819

Biography

Banker in Lancaster, identified in the 1818 will of George Cruden of Surinam (q.v.) as the mortgagee for £15,000 on Cruden's one-third interest in two estates in Surinam ('the full value').

  1. The banking firm of Thomas Worswick Sons & Company of Lancaster collapsed in 1822. Although in a brief secondary account of the bank Richard Worswick is not identified as a partner (the partners are shown as Thomas Worswick sen (d. 1804), his sons Alexander (d. 1814), 'Robert' (d. 1819 sic) and (reportedly) Thomas jun., and the latter's 'cousin' Alexander Andrade), it appears likely that Richard was in fact connected with the firm, and was probably the partner identified as the son of Thomas Worswick and dying in 1819. Richard Worswick's assets, including the Grange estate at Ellel, were subject to the Chancery suit of Giles v. Andrade: Richard's nephew Alexander Andrade of London was the beneficiary of Richard's will, which included the bequest of 'all my messuages or, dwelling houses, estates, plantations, negroes, lands....' in the West Indies, and of mortgages over the same categories of 'property.'

It seems likely that Thomas jun. and Alexander Andrade were both nephews of Richard Worswick.
