Thomas Weir Tayler senior

???? - 1836

Biography

Thomas Weir Tayler, owner of Auchenbeddie estate in Manchester, Jamaica from at least 1815.

Possibly the son of Thomas William Tayler, to whom Auchenbeddie is registered in the 1811 Jamaica Almanac (though Wm may be a misreading of Weir as happened for example in the indexing of the baptism records for his two eldest children). A Doctor Thomas Taylor was buried 08/02/1806 in St Elizabeth.

No baptism has been found for Thomas Weir Tayler.

Father of five children with Ann Pierce, "a free mulatto": Elizabeth (born 1788), Margaret (1790), John Pierce (1791), Mary Mortimer (1796) and Thomas Weir (1800), all baptised in St Elizabeth in 1810. By 1817, all five children had themselves become slave-owners and the two eldest girls were living in England.

Father of at least nine children by Sarah (surname not given but later given in his will as Sarah Church, "my present housekeeper"). Four were baptised in St Elizabeth in 1820: William Mortimer (born 1805), Henry Church (1806), Elizabeth Mortimer (1808) and Margaret Weir (1810).

Another five children of Thomas Taylor were baptised in Manchester in 1822: George Chapman (born 1811), Helen Wilson (1814, father's will gives her as Eleanor), Ann Maitland (1816), Sarah (1819, father's will gives her as Sarah Church) and Mary Loyd (1820).

Thomas Weir Tayler's daughter Margaret married William Ashton at St Mary Magdalene 28/11/1814 in Lincoln, England; his other daughter Elizabeth married Charles Wilson in 1818, lived in Alford, Lincolnshire until at least 1871. Thomas Weir Tayler registered enslaved people as their trustee and guardian in 1817.

Thomas Weir Tayler was deceased by the time of the 1829 slave register. His executrix was Sarah Church. The slave compensation was awarded to Sarah, William Mortimer, Henry Church, Elizabeth Mortimer, Margaret Weir, Helen Wilson, George and Ann Maitland.
