Biography

A kinsman of William Helyar and "poor but seemingly honest", Hillyard arrived in Jamaica in 1678 to manage Bybrook estate in return for one third of the profits. Helyar came to mistrust Hillyard and so sent his son John Helyar to Jamaica in 1686; the two men quarrelled violently. Hillyard was laid off in 1687, receiving £786 in payment for an alleged debt.
