Biography

Son of John Matthews Boswell and his wife Sarah nee Saxby. Due to inherit a half share in Abbey Green estate in St David, Jamaica, under the will of his father who died in 1827 (his mother was tenant-for-life). Married Jane Napper Q1 1845 in Rottingdean, Sussex.

Abbey Green was in receivership in 1820 but later restored to Boswell's mother and her second husband Henry Coppard. However, slave compensation was awarded to William Jegon and George Rutherford, as mortgagees.

His wife Jane was bequeathed £1,100 in the will of her father John Laker Napper (proved in 1853) in trust in government or other securities, the interest for her own sole and separate use. On her death £600 of this to her son Thomas Boswell and the remaining £500 to Jane's two sisters. A third codicil to his will states that if the said John Matthews Boswell or any of his family except his issue by my said daughter would from any cause whatsoever but for this my codicil at any time become entitled to any portion of the monies by my said will directed to be invested for my daughter Jane Boswell the same shall go to the child or children or other next of kin of my said daughter according to the Statute of Distributions.

Thomas Boswell, son of John Mathew Boswell and his wife Jane was baptised 07/09/1851 in Billinghurst, Sussex. The family have not been traced with certainty in the censuses.
