James Gibbon

???? - 1792

Biography

Absentee slave-owner, owner of Tunbridge and in St Andrew Jamaica until c. 1791. He is known to have been the brother-in-law of Barnaby Backwell (d. 1754), who had married Sarah Gibbon as his second wife. Barnaby Backwell was in turn the father-in-law of William Praed (q.v.), who came to co-ownership of the two estates with Sarah Backwell (q.v.), another daughter of Barnaby Backwell. Sarah Backwell's will [made in 1792] proved in 1797 makes clear that the Jamaican estates (and substantial property in Britain) had recently descended to her and her sister Elizabeth Tyringham Praed as heirs of their maternal uncle James Gibbon. To date, no will or death-date for James Gibbon has been traced, but the Accounts Produce suggest that he died c. 1792, when the ownership of the estate changed from him to William Praed and Sarah Backwell. A James Gibbon was buried at Middle Temple in May 1792, and might well be this man.
