Joseph Pickering

???? - 1789

London attorney, in partnership with his son Tobias and with Thomas Sermon. He was probably the former owner of Pickerings and certainly the legatee under the will of his brother-in-law Tobias Frere I of the latter's estates and enslaved people on Barbados, which were foreclosed by the Lascelles family in 1787. The will of Joseph Pickering makes no reference to either Pickerings or to the Frere estates. Instead his will gave instruction for his burial at Lee Church and set out his partnership arrangement with Tobias Pickering and Thomas Sermon, under which he was to receive a half-share in the profits of the 14 year partnership, and then one-third share for his estate after his death.

Will of Joseph Pickering of Lewisham [made in 1787] proved 31/07/1789, PROB 11/1182/144.
