John Morant III

1696 - 1734

Biography

  1. Son of John Morant II (d. 1721) and his wife Elizabeth (d. 1706). Grandson of John Morant I (d. 1683, the first of the Morants in Jamaica). Married Mary Pennant, daughter of Edward Pennant of Clarendon and sister of Sir Samuel Pennant.

  2. Four children baptised in Clarendon, Jamaica, to John and Mary (nee Pennant) Morant: John (1723), Edward (1730), Judith Olivia (1732) and Samuel (1734). The eldest son John died aged 18 in 1741 and Samuel died age 18 in 1752. Monumental inscriptions suggest John and Mary may also be the parents of William (died 1744 age 17), Eleanor Angelina (died 1756 age 18) and Elizabeth Gale nee Morant (died 1756 age 24). Mary Morant nee Pennant died in 1756 age 60.

  3. John Morant died 06/02/1734 in his 34th year.

  4. John Morant was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 4631 acres of land in Clarendon and 3528 acres of land in Vere, total 8159 acres. It's not clear which John Morant this refers to, as by 1754 the family estates had devolved to John Morant III's surviving son Edward Morant (1730-1791).
