Biography

Anglican clergyman and remarkably a West India merchant in partnership with George Reid jun. (q.v.), presumably through his wife Sarah Haughton James' Jamaica connections.

Will of Rev. Philip Castel Sherard clerk of Godmanchester Huntingdonshire proved 01/04/1815. In the will he gave up to his wife Sarah Haughton Sherard any property to which he might have been entitled from or through John Haughton James of Burnt Ground in Jamaica. He set aside £15,000 for his younger children, identified as Emma and Haughton James Sherard. His main heir was his son Philip Castel Sherard, later 9th Baron Sherard (1804-1896), who married Anne the daughter of the Barbados slave-owner Nathaniel Weekes in 1834. His sons Haughton James Sherard and Rev. Simon Haughton Sherard continued the name of their mother's slave-owning family.
1st son of Rev. Castel Sherard, Rector of Stainsby and Gunby, Lincolnshire. Deacon, 1790; Curate of Diddington, Huntingdonshire, 1790-2. Rector of Swineshead, Huntingdonshire. 1792-1812. Of Glatton, Huntingdonshire. In 1796 married Sarah Haughton, daughter of Montagu James of Jamaica. Died in Brighton.

Details of his partnership are included in Oakley v Pasheller, 1836, in which the debt of £10,000 incurred by Sherard and George Reid to Sir Charles Oakeley was held to be a liability of the successor partnership of George Reid and Roger Kynaston rather than of Sherard's estate.

Although neither the Jamaica Almanacs nor the will of George Reid senior [made in 1819 and proved in 1823] reflect this, a document of the demise of the estate dated 09/08/1823 in the John Carter Brown Library suggests that Rev. Philip Sherard was a joint-owner of Friendship c. 1810 with George Reid jun., known to have been his partner.
