Sir Francis Baring

???? - 1810

Biography

Founder of the eponymous firm, the '6th Great Power' of 19th century Europe. In conjunction with Nathaniel Clayton (q.v.) he appeared in connection with the Bogue estate in Jamaica: the references to this in the Baring Archive do not make clear what was the role of Baring and Clayton, but they appeared to have succeeded in some capacity to the half of Bogue [and its attached enslaved people] previously owned by Paul Benfield (q.v.), probably as mortgagees. The Baring partners of his grandchildren's generation appear in the compensation records in pursuit of the compensation for the enslaved people of the Berbice slave-owner Wolfert Katz (q.v.), to whom the Barings firm was heavily exposed.
