Elizabeth Baily of Speen

Biography

Elizabeth Baily was a creditor of Valentine Morris (q.v., under Valentine Morris II) and in 1783 Morris assigned to her land and 'plantations' in St Vincent to secure the £400 p.a payment he had agreed to make towards his debt to her of £2270: Morris was entitled to the rents and produce as long as he connived to make the £400 p.a payments to her. The will of Elizabeth Baliy widow of Speen Berkshire proved 15/03/1791 is silent on debt from Morris and on the St Vincent property. Elizabeth Baily's grandson Francis, the son of her son Richard who predeceased her, was a distinguished astronomer, and President of the Royal Astronomical Society: he has an entry in the ODNB as 'stockbroker and astronomer.'
