Biography

Free woman of colour, awarded the compensation as owner of the enslaved people on Look Out estate in Manchester, former partner of John Angell and then of John Racker Webb (q.v.), mother-in-law of George Bowley Medley (q.v.) and Robert Podmore Clark (q.v.), mother of Ruth and Ann Angell (both q.v.).

  1. Mary Wint, James Wint, Elizabeth Wint, Margaret Duncan, Ruth Duncan and Isabella Duncan were named as children and residuary legatees in the will of Ruth Anderson, owner of New Hall in Manchester, who died between 1829 and 1831.

  2. Mary, daughter of Samuel Wint by Ruth Anderson, born 27/07/1766 and baptised 29/12/1768 in Clarendon, Jamaica. James Anderson Wint, Ann Anderson Wint and Elizabeth Anderson Wint, baptised in Vere, 16/11/1776. Margaret (born 10/06/1783), Ruth (born 07/08/1786) and Isabella (born 10/06/1790), reputed children of Mr Alexander Duncan by Ruth Anderson, baptised in St Elizabeth, 18/10/1793. Mary Wint is elsewhere described as "free quadroon".

  3. Mary Wint was also the mother of Elizabeth Cerf, born 17/09/1799, reputed daughter of Mr Henry Cerf by Mary Wint, "a free quadroon", baptised in St Elizabeth 07/09/1800. However, a Henry Wint married an Elizabeth Wint - this may be Mary's sister Elizabeth Anderson Wint, see 2., above and separate entry for Elizabeth Cerf nee Wint.
