Biography

Slave-owner on St Vincent, where he claimed unsuccessfully for the compensation for the enslaved people on his Belmont estate, but awarded the compensation for a group of enslaved people on Nevis in a claim split into two, and also claimed apparently unsuccessfully for the compensation on the Meales and Mountain estates on Nevis.

  1. Solicitor-General and speaker of the House of Assembly on St Vincent, father of both the writer John Wilson Ross and Sir Robert Dalrymple Ross, army officer and politican in Australia. John Pemberton Ross's wife, unnamed in both ODNB entries, was the daughter of Dr Alexander Anderson, the botanist also in the ODNB.

  2. Son of Andrew Ross of St Vincent, matriculated Brasenose Oxford 31/03/1804 aged 18. He was the beneficiary under the will of Robert Pemberton of Nevis, who in his will made and attested in 1802 left John Pemberton Ross, identified as his nephew, his property including enslaved people on Nevis.

  3. John Pemberton and Eliza Ross's daughter Isabella Augusta was baptised at St Marylebone 23/10/1820. 'J.P. Ross' was a witness to her marriage in 1841 when she was given as of 32 York Place.

  4. John Pemberton Ross of St Vincent was listed as a subscriber to Charles Shephard's An Historical Account of the Island of Saint Vincent, published in 1832.

  5. The death of John P. Ross HM Solicitor-General and formerly Speaker of the House was reported at Belmont St Vincent, aged 59, on 03/08/1846.
