Biography

Awarded the compensation for 4 enslaved people in St James Jamiaca.

  1. Husband of Grace Anglin Scarlett (1793-1821), one of the daughters of Philip Anglin Scarlett (1768-1823) and Bonella Bowen (1773-1808). Robert Savage, widower, of Bathwick, remarried, to Charlotte Mary Broderip, at St Cuthbert's, Wells, Somerset, 17/07/1824. The will of Charlotte's father Edmund Broderip the elder, who died in 1828, names his sons-in-law as Richard Oliver Smith [q.v., married to Mary Smith nee Broderip] and Robert Savage and his son as Edmund Broderip the younger [q.v.]. An infant daughter of Robert Savage, Elizabeth Harriet Savage of Sydney Place, Bath, died 25/09/1825 and was buried in Bathwick with her aunt, Mary Smith.

  2. Grace Anglin Savage of 11 Montague Place, daughter of Robert Savage, married Robert Alexander Mitchell 03/06/1846 St George Bloomsbury.

  3. This is almost certainly the same Robert Savage formerly of 16 Norland Place but late of 19 Eccleston Square who died 25/05/1862 and whose will was proved 29/07/1862 by Marian Elizabeth Arkcoll of 19 Eccleston Square the daughter one of the reisduary legatees, effects under £3000. There was a subsequent Chancery suit between Marian Elizabeth Arkcoll (and her husband Francis William Arkcoll) and Arthur William Savage. At the marriage of the Arkcolls on 26/08/1852, Marian Elizabeth Savage's address is given as 11 Montague Place and her father as Robert Savage; at the baptism of Arthur William (the son of Robert and Charlotte Mary Savage) at St George Bloomsbury 23/06/1841 his parents address was also given as Montague Place.

  4. In 1851 Robert Savage retired solicitor aged 60 was living at 11 Montague place with wife Charlotte aged 50, both born Somerset, and children Robert aged 24, Marian aged 21 and Arthur W., aged 12, the sons born St Georges Bloomsbury and the daughter Somerset.

Monumental Inscriptions in England relating to Jamaica Volume Ia: inscription on a flat stone in Bathwick, Bath 'To the memory of Grace Anglin, the beloved wife of Robert Savage Esqr of this parish and daughter of Philip Anglin Scarlett of the Island of Jamaica, who departed this life on the 30th day of July 1821 in the 26th year of her age'. The entry also cites the B[ath] C[hronicle]: '1821 Thursday Aug. 2 Monday, died to the inexpressible grief of her afflcited husband and family, the amiable and beloved wife of Robert Savage, esq., of Sydney Place.
