Edward Roger Pratt junior

26th Sep 1789 - 28th May 1863

Biography

Possibly the Edward Roger Pratt, awarded slave compensation for Greenland estate in St Kitts in 1835 as trustee of William Woodley, although this may be his father Edward Roger Pratt senior, who died in 1838.

  1. Eldest son of Edward Roger, of Ryston Hall, Norfolk and Pleasance, daughter of Samuel Browne, of King's Lynn. Succeeded his father at Ryston Hall, 1838. [The Pratt family had been established at Ryston Hall since the late C17th.] Died unmarried at Ryston Hall, and was succeeded by his brother Jermyn (1816); brother also of William (1823).

  2. 1851 and 1861 Censuses: Pratt lived at Ryston House, Norfolk with his sister, Blanch.

  3. Left less than £16,000 at his death in 1863.

  4. Collector of art including works of Egyptian antiquity. "He spent three years on a grand tour around the Mediterranean, including Egypt, from Christmas 1833 to May 1834. His journal, much of it written in French, gives an account of the ancient sites he visited, along with annotated maps and some tart observations on the manner in which his fellow Europeans treated the monuments and tombs. It is possible he acquired some of his Egyptian works of art on this tour, but at least one object in his collection came from the Giovanni d'Athanasi sale at Sotheby's, London, March 13th, 1837. Two New Kingdom steles from the Pratt collection were sold at Sotheby's, New York, December 17th, 1998, nos. 24 and 26, the latter now in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art." His acquistions included an Egyptian limestone monument or stela dating from 1295-1069 BC, whose export sale was blocked in 2001. It was then acquired by the British Museum.
