Biography

West India merchant, son of William Manning (1777-1835) and Mary Hunter (1771-1847), co-trustee (with the Earl of Rosslyn (q.v.)) under the marriage settlement of Bethell Walrond and Lady Janet St Claire and as such awarded compensation for Upper and Lower Walrond estates in Antigua. He also peppered with an indignant counter-claim on Little Duers in Antigua alleging his name had been used as a trustee by Manning & Anderdon and the estate and enslaved people conveyed to him without knowledge or his consent.

  1. His father William Manning was a West India merchant and landowner in St Kitts, MP for Lymington 1801-1806, Evesham 1806-1818 and Penryn 1826-1830, leading voice in the West India lobby.

  2. First marriage 07/11/1828: "At St-George's, Hanover-square, Chas. John, second son of W. Manning, esq. M.P. Of Combe Bank, Kent, to Cath. Sophia, eldest daughter of major gen. Sir Rich. Downes Jackson, K.C.B. and niece to the countess Mulgrove." Second marriage to Louisa Augusta Henniker, daughter of Rev. Sir Augustus Brydges Henniker and Elizabeth Henniker-Major, Q3 1862 St George Hanover Square, London.

  3. Living at Pendell Court, Bletchingley, Surrey in the 1841 census: Charles Jno Manning Esqr, age 51, Deputy Lieutenant - Commissioner of Property taxn, born Totteridge, Hertfordshire, with his first wife Catherine Sophia age 40, children Charles Downes, 21, Mary Harriett, 18, Alice, 8 and servants. Living at 15 Princes Gardens, Knightsbridge, Westminster, in the 1871 census: Charles J Manning, age 71, West India Mercht. Deputy Lieut., born Totteridge, Kent, with his second wife Louisa A., 43, born Thornham, Suffolk, and their daughters Agnes, 7, Veronica, 5, Bertha, 1, Augusta, 0 and servants.

  4. Died 29/11/1880 at 15 Princes Gardens, Knightsbridge, Middlesex, aged 81, leaving effects under £70,000. Offices at 109 Leadenhall-street. Executors were Eric Carington Smith of 1 Lombard Street, London and Edwin Freshfield of 5 Bank Buildings, London.

    He was brother of Henry Edward Manning (1808–1892), Roman Catholic convert and Archbishop of Westminster (1865-1892) and Cardinal (1875-1892).
