Henry Pinckard

Awarded with Netlam Tory (q.v.) the compensation for two groups of enslaved people in Kingston and (as 'Henry Pinkard') for the enslaved people on Relief and Healthy Hill in St Ann, in all three cases probably as trustees. He also appears as a correspondent of the Commissioners of Slave Compensation in what appears to be an agency capacity in several other claims in Jamaica.

1. Son of Joseph Pinckard (1766-), and nephew of the physician George Pinckard, author of 'Notes on the West Indies'. George Henry Pinckard of Combe Court (born 1805) was a close relative.

2. He was Auditor of the Jamaica Steam Navigation Company and author of Observations on the Management and Extraordinary Losses of that company (1838), in which he attributed the collapse of the company’s operations largely to mismanagement by its Chairman, Edmund Francis Green(q.v.), and those of its London Directors (including Green’s brother) who were his “obsequious servants and tools”. In 1837-8 his address was 1 Chapel Place, Poultry, London. On account of his remarks concerning E.F. Green, he was in 1839 assaulted in Hyde Park by Green’s nephew Edward Thomas Fitzgerald.

3. In 1861 Henry Pinckard aged 65. 'Merchant (shipping)' born Exeter Devon was living at 10 Woodland Terrace Greenwich with his wife Agnes aged 40, born Kingston Jamaica. In 1841 aged 45 he had been living at Grays Inn Road apparently single. Buried Kensal Green All Souls 05/01/1867 of Manor Park, Lee.

4. Letters of Administration for Henry Pinckard who died 31/12/1866 at 8 Manor Park Lee granted to Agnes Wemyss Pinckard,the widow 31/01/1867, effects under £9000.
